1951 - 2025
NOTE: Evy is included in our 1967-68 junior yearbook, but does not appear nor is listed in our 1968-69 senior yearbook.
Evalyn “Evy” LeAnne Erdman Self, age 73, of Topeka, Kansas, passed away Monday morning, August 25, 2025, at Midland Care Hospice House after a valiant battle with cancer. She was born November 17, 1951, the daughter of LaVerne Roy “Erkie” Erdman and Elizabeth Fern Barnes Melvin.
Evy was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Cindy Alejos and brother, David Erdman.
Evy attended Hayden High School and graduated from Topeka High School in 1969. She met the man of her dreams, Rickey “Rick” Reed Self, after he returned from Vietnam. They married on June 14, 1972, enjoying over 53 years together. He survives.
She is also survived by her two sons, Jayson Self (Jennifer) and Jared Self (April); grandchildren, Savannah Barnes (Brady), Channing Self, Ellowynn White (Martayvian), Samuel Self; and four great-grandchildren, Leona, Bryxlee, Brody and Maelynn; her stepmother, Clara Erdman; four sisters, Neet O’Conner, Joey Erdman, Deanna Danielson (Denise), Audrey Danielson (Chuck); two brothers, Bruce Danielson (Lora) and John Erdman; along with numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews and so many friends whom she would call family.
Evy worked for the people; if something needed handling, she would figure out a way to get it done. This was true from her early work at Wicher’s Photography to Stormont-Vail Healthcare, over 20 years at St. Francis, and lastly to the service of numerous veterans at the Colmery O’Neil Veterans Administration in Topeka, where she retired.
Evy had a gift of caring for others, and she was exceptional at it. Whether making meals for family and friends when they came by, giving the gift of time to listen or shop, or for just loving on you when having you were having a hard time in life, she was there. In her spare time, she loved to shop, craft and crochet blankets.
Visitation will be Tuesday, September 2, 2025, from 5-7 p.m. at Kevin Brennan Family Funeral Home, 2801 SW Urish Road, Topeka KS 66614. A Celebration of Evy’s Life will be Wednesday, September 3, at 1 p.m. at the funeral home.

Evy and I had several classes together at THS, and I always enjoyed being with her. It is good to read that her friendly, compassionate spirit continued to be a strength of hers throughout her life.
